" High school is about finding who you are, because that’s more important than trying to be someone else.” – Nick Jonas

About City School

Welcome to City School

City School is a semestered alternative high school that offers a full range of academic and University-bound courses in Grades 9-12. City School is an alternate high school located in downtown Toronto at the Waterfront Neighbourhood Community Centre at Bathurst Street and Queens Quay West.

Alternative schools are generally smaller. This is not only better for those who are socially anxious but also for those who require more intervention. The lower student-to-teacher ratio at alternative schools like City School often affords students increased one-on-one time with teachers.

City School is located in one of the most beautiful spots in Toronto. The classrooms look out on Lake Ontario and the downtown skyline. They are ideally located for urban "natural" study. Integrated Arts and Environmental Science classes utilize the native species garden at the Music Garden, the Toronto Islands and the Garrison Creek for field studies.

You know students learn at different speeds and in different ways. In alternative schools, it takes patience and creativity to figure out how to reach each student. The smaller group settings help, but students still require extra assistance from teachers to learn the information. People are different from each other so they should use different services, tools, facilities, methods, etc.

An approach often used by therapists is to view a situation or teen behaviour differently from what you have been doing, a technique known as reframing. By shifting perspective, reframing offers insight into what is triggering teens' behaviour often comes into focus. This is a grand issue every parent and teachers should know more about it especially when we are talking about Alternative Schools.

Take note that Alternative Schools may have deadline enrollment or work from a continuous enrollment model.   Don’t assume you’ve missed a deadline. By design, alternative schools adjust instruction so they may be able to enroll your child mid-quarter or even during the summer. Because alternative schools are unique, expect each to have different application requirements and take time to understand the application and enrollment process including any associated deadlines.
